A Massachusetts community is mourning the heartbreaking deaths of Andover father Samir Naili and his 8-year-old daughter, Kashmera Naili, who were killed Saturday night after their vehicle was struck at a red light in North Reading.
According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the devastating collision occurred on Route 28 when a 21-year-old Paxton man, Matthew Sweeney, was allegedly driving an Acura MDX at a high rate of speed. His vehicle crashed into a Honda HR-V occupied by Samir and Kashmera, causing the Honda to become engulfed in flames.
Emergency crews and several good Samaritans rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue the occupants of the Honda. Despite their efforts, both Samir, 35, and his daughter were pronounced dead at the scene.
The loss has devastated the Naili family. Samir’s mother described her son as a wonderful father who loved music and enjoyed teaching his daughter. She said the father and daughter had only recently left their Andover home to purchase milk when the tragedy occurred.
For the family, the ordinary nature of that short trip makes the loss even more difficult to comprehend. What should have been a simple evening errand instead ended in an unimaginable tragedy, leaving relatives and friends struggling to understand how a routine moment could turn so devastating so quickly.
Kashmera was a student in the Andover public school system and was preparing to begin third grade. Her grandmother remembered her as beautiful, intelligent, empathetic, and kind. She said Kashmera cared deeply about her classmates and friends and was always willing to support others.
The young girl’s death has also left an emotional void within her school community. Teachers, classmates, families, and friends will be left to remember a child whose life was filled with promise and potential. Her family had been looking forward to watching her continue growing, learning, and reaching new milestones.
Witnesses described the crash as chaotic and terrifying. Stergios Papadopoulous, owner of Captain Pizza near the intersection of North and Main streets, said he saw the damaged vehicles and heard police asking whether anyone remained inside. He and others attempted to assist, but the Honda’s doors could not be opened before the flames intensified.
Another witness, Renaldo Demedeiros, also tried to help rescue the father and daughter. He described how quickly the fire spread, saying the flames took over the vehicle within seconds.
The incident has also highlighted the courage of the bystanders and first responders who immediately attempted to help. Kashmera’s grandmother expressed gratitude toward those who rushed toward the burning vehicle despite the danger.
Sweeney was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges in connection with the crash, including felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, and operating to endanger. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court.
The criminal charges represent allegations, and Sweeney is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
For the Naili family, however, the legal proceedings cannot undo the devastating loss of a father and his young daughter. Samir will be remembered as a loving father who enjoyed music and teaching his child, while Kashmera will be remembered as a bright, compassionate girl whose life was tragically cut short.
Their deaths have left family members, friends, classmates, and members of the Andover community grieving. As they mourn, those who knew Samir and Kashmera will hold onto the memories of their lives and the love they shared.
