The military and public affairs communities are mourning the reported death of Sgt. 1st Class Edwin J. Pierce, a Virginia man and recently retired U.S. Army service member whose life was marked by more than two decades of dedicated military service.
Pierce’s passing has brought profound sadness to his family, friends, former teammates, and colleagues throughout the Army Public Affairs community. He had only recently entered retirement after completing a distinguished military career, making his sudden death especially heartbreaking for those who had looked forward to seeing him enjoy the next chapter of his life.
According to the information shared by the Army Public Affairs Association, Pierce died following a motorcycle accident. The crash reportedly ended the life of a man who had devoted more than 20 years to serving his country and supporting the Army community.
Pierce began his Army career in 2006 as an aviation crew chief. He spent more than five years working in that role before making a career transition into public affairs in 2011. That change would ultimately define much of the remainder of his military service.
After joining the public affairs community, Pierce served for nearly 14 years as a public affairs specialist. His work placed him in a position to help communicate the Army’s mission and tell the stories of Soldiers and military organizations. Public affairs professionals play an important role in connecting military institutions with service members, families, the public, and the media, and Pierce dedicated a significant portion of his career to that responsibility.
In 2024, Pierce took on another important leadership role when he became the Digital Management Division NCOIC at the Pentagon. The position reflected his experience and commitment to military public affairs and digital communication.
After more than two decades of service, Pierce retired from the Army and had only recently begun what should have been a well-earned period of retirement. Instead, his loved ones and former colleagues are now faced with the devastating news of his death.
For members of the Army Public Affairs community, Pierce’s loss represents the departure of a respected colleague and teammate.
